After the first erruption, 1104 started terrible storries circulate about Hekla. People believed that the gateway of Hell existed in Hekla if not hell itself.
During the eruption 1341, people who traveled to hekla had hearn black birds coming from the crater. It was volcanic bombs which were floating in the air and the whistle sound came from exhaisted gases of the bombs. It was construed that the souls of the censorious people was suffering in hell.
1510 people thouhgt they saw king Hans soul in the volcano. That strenghtened the faith that hell existed in Hekla.
